Film portraits by the bride and groom

I really love photography.  I love it as an art form, a hobby, and a career.   I love photography as a story telling device, as a history preserver, and as a way of pure communication.

On July 7th, 2018 Matt and I got married!  We hired my favorite photographer and friend, Chelsea Magruder Photo and Design to beautifully capture our day.  Then we also brought a couple more cameras.

My best friend Brandy gave me one of the most amazing gifts a few years ago, my beautiful goddaughter, Cora (and now my beautiful goddaughter Maia too!)   Watching Cora grow has been nothing short of amazing. When Brandy told me Cora’s favorite thing right now was taking selfies, I knew I had to get her a camera.  I got her the Kidizoom Duo that has a selfie mode to easily switch to a front facing camera.   I gave it to her at the wedding wanting to see the day through her eyes.   Sharing my favorite hobby with her was absolutely magical.

I also brought my film camera with one black and white roll of film.

Why film?

I get this question all the time.   There’s something so nostalgic and tactile about physically shooting film as opposed to its digital counterpart.   I love the modern advances of digital photography.   I also love the original perfection of an age old method used in film photography.   A standard roll of film has 24 exposures, requiring me to slow down and think even more critically about every shot I take.  I love photographing with intention and emotion and film helps me capture the raw emotion of a wedding with film’s natural grain and natural imperfections.  You tell me, can you notice a difference below?

I brought one roll of film because I wanted to take a moment after our first look to capture portraits of one another.   I wanted him to see how amazing he looks through my eyes, and I wanted to see how he saw me through his.   We posed each other and shared a few very special moments just looking into one another, capturing the emotion we felt.

I can’t even begin to express how much love and happiness I felt on our wedding day.  Doing what you love with the ones you love gives you such a sense of wholeness.   Sharing these experiences with Cora and with Matthew on our wedding day was a dream come true.
